Are original period features highly valued?

Usually when it comes to selling a property we think of new, modern, pristine features as offering the real pull factor. Functional kitchens, minimalist living rooms and white clean surfaces are considered ‘expensive’ by today’s generation. But never mind expensive; are theydesirable? The features that most people want are naturally going to lead to an increase in demand, and therefore add value to whatever property you’re trying to sell, whether it’s a brand new building or an old period classic.

Recent research has called out that period features in a modern home are becoming more and more fashionable; people want the convenience of modern living with the character and charm of more traditional builds. One way of achieving this in any kind of property is to install traditional features such as wood sash windows, bay windows, wood casement windowsand timber sliding doors. The same research suggests it’s even better if these are authentic pieces that have been restored to their former glory. Often this will be achievable whilst also improving the function of a window to make it more energy efficient and easy to use, easily keeping up with modern standards.

But what is it about traditional features such aswood sash windowsthat makes them so desirable? You’d be forgiven for thinking that old fashioned period windows are draughty and difficult to maintain, but these days that really couldn’t be further from the truth. Traditional windows can be fitted with all the modern conveniences that make windows today so energy efficient and functional. Easy to open, secure and even triple glazed to keep noise pollution to a minimum and keep heat locked tightly inside the home.Timber sliding doorsare extremely popular in modern homes that have nice open gardens, providing a nice entrance to the kitchen and turning it into an excellent venue for dinner parties and barbecues. A timber door can be thrown wide open in a way that just isn’t possible with plain old PVC doors, and they look a great deal more attractive and interesting. With traditional features, you can make your home look as good on the outside as it does on the inside – what’s not to like?
