It’s been just over a year since Smithy Cottage – complete with Patchett Joinery premium doors and windows – won Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home.
Smithy Cottage
Smithy Cottage is a Grade II Listed Building tucked away in a conservation area within Yorkshire Dales National Park. The owners of the cottage set about bringing the house back to modern use. As part of this renovation, they needed replacement timber windows and doors to contribute towards the energy efficiency of the home. As the building is in a conservation area, extra care had to be taken to replicate the original look of the building. Patchett Joinery was approached by Richard Dawson of R Dawson Architect RIBA Ltd to provide energy-efficient timber windows and doors in keeping with the original look and feel of the building.
Established in 1840, Patchett Joinery specialises in crafting beautiful timber windows and doors in historic buildings and for houses in conservation areas.
We crafted Accoya Concealed Balance Sliding Sash windows, high-performance Flush Casement windows and entrance doors.
Accoya was chosen for superior thermal conductivity, making it an ideal choice for energy efficiency and CO2-neutral life cycle. It also has excellent paint retention meaning it needs less frequent coating and maintenance.
The doors and windows were fitted with Antique Brass and Black Pewter hardware keeping with the traditional look of the cottage. They were also handcrafted with Pilkington Opitherm S1 Plus, a high-performance glass with an incredibly low U value, contributing to the reduction of heat loss leading to energy savings.
All of the timber windows and doors were handmade at our Bradford-based workshop and installed as part of our Silver-level installation service.
Following the renovations by the full project team, Smithy Cottage was nominated for an LABC Award.
The LABC Award Ceremony
The awards ceremony, attended by more than 900 leading construction figures, took place at the prestigious Grosvenor House in London in January 2024. Dave Upton (Sales Director) and Janine Roberts (Sales, Design & Project Management) attended the ceremony on behalf of Patchett Joinery, along with R Dawson Chartered RIBA Architect, Holme Building, Yorkshire Energy Systems and J B Langley.
Smithy Cottage was judged by a panel of industry experts with a focus on the highest quality projects and awarded Best Residential Conversion or Alteration to an Existing Home.
LABC said:
“Based in the Yorkshire Dales National Park just outside Skipton, Smithy Cottage is an excellent example of bringing a house back to modern use. As a Grade II listed cottage in a Conservation Area within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, sensitivity was needed to ensure the conversion was kept in keeping, as well as reducing the environmental impact of both the build, as well as the finished property. This proved a challenge, but an achievable one for this project team, evident by the result of an excellent conversion with superb preservation methods and environmental practices.”
Congratulating the whole team on their success, Lorna Stimpson, LABC Chief Executive, said:
“I firmly believe that one of the best ways to see more good work is to praise building excellence and publicly acknowledge companies, designers, site managers and tradespeople who go that extra mile.”
