What Are Internally Beaded Windows?

At Patchett Joinery, we specialise in crafting high-performance timber windows and doors designed for beauty, longevity, and security. One of the key features in our high-performance glazing system is internal beading—a technique that offers multiple benefits over traditional external glazing.

What Is Internal Beading in Windows?

Internal beading, also known as internally glazed windows, refers to a manufacturing method where the glazing beads (the timber cassettes that hold the glass in place) are located inside the window frame, on the interior side of the property. This contrasts with externally beaded windows, where the beads are applied to the outside.

Key Benefits of Internally Beaded Windows

1. Improved Security

Internally beaded glazing significantly enhances window security. Since the glass is held in place from the inside, it cannot be removed from the outside, making it more difficult for intruders to tamper with the glass without breaking it. This acts as a powerful deterrent against break-ins.

2. Better protection against UV degradation

Because the beading is located inside the window, it’s less exposed to UV rays reducing the chance of the external finish fading.

3. Enhanced Aesthetic with Traditional Appeal

Our handcrafted windows feature a classic putty line profile, offering the traditional appearance of traditional timber windows, but with the security advantages of external beading.

How Do Internally Beaded Windows Work?

Here’s a breakdown of the components involved in our internal glazing system:

  • A. Internal Timber Glazing Bead: Pre-assembled as a cassette for cleaner joints. Fixed to the sash with security glazing tape on glass packers.
  • B. Ventilation channel. Extends through the tenons to ventilate the glazing platform and manage condensation.
  • C. Double-Sided Security Tape: Bonds the glass to the cassettes, maintaining a clean sightline (where the sash stops and the glass starts).
  • D. Full perimeter silicone seal.
  • E. Putty Line Profile: Achieves the traditional aesthetic while maintaining internal security.
  • F. Spacer bar.
  • G. Glazing packer.
