What Is Water-Based Paint? Benefits for Timber Windows & Doors

What is water-based paint?

Water-based paint uses water as its primary solvent instead of oil-based substances like spirits or turpentine. Common types of water-based paint include:

  • Emulsion paint
  • Chalk paint
  • Latex paint
  • Acrylic paint

These paints are ideal for a wide range of applications, including ceilings, walls, and both interior and exterior wood surfaces.

At Patchett Joinery, we use Sikkens exterior waterborne coatings based on the latest technologies with the minimum amounts of VOC contents, which vastly reduces the Volatile Organic Compound compared to solvent-borne options – making them a more ‘eco-friendly’ choice.

Why use water-based paint?

A durable and breathable coating

At Patchett Joinery, we use a high-performance microporous water-based painting system that allows timber to “breathe” and adapt to changes in climate. This system helps prevent:

  • Weathering
  • Fungal attack
  • UV degradation

We use a water-based 3-coat painting system that gives a film build of dry material, increasing the lifespan of the paint.

  • 1) Deluge – Our first step is deluge spraying, which permeates into all the joints and ensures a thorough coating. Deluge also provides extra anti-fungal and anti-rot properties.

  • 2) Water-based primer – Next, we apply a coat of primer, ensuring the quality and longevity of the finish of our premium windows and doors.

  • 3) Water-based topcoat – Lastly, your choice of colour finish is applied. Working with our paint partner, Sikkens, we can finish in any RAL colour or match against all well-known paint ranges and brands. With the ability to have different internal and external finishes, your windows and doors can be finished just as you require.

Our factory is audited quarterly to ensure that the finished product has the highest quality paint finish and performance you would expect.

‘Eco-friendly’ and low-VOC

Water-based paint is significantly more eco-friendly than solvent-based alternatives. Benefits include:

  • Reduced harmful emissions
  • Fewer disposal issues associated with solvent-based systems
  • Less toxic VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) which are harmful to the environment and potentially to children

Is Sikkens paint ‘eco-friendly’?
