Georgian-Style Timber Window Replacement for an 18th-Century Farmhouse in Harrogate

Background: Rejuvenating a Historic Harrogate Home

Patchett Joinery were approached by homeowners in Harrogate, looking to replace the majority of the windows in their 18th-century farmhouse. Over many decades, the property had acquired a mixture of window styles, including several Victorian sash windows at the end of their life and 1960s casement windows that no longer matched the character of the home.

The homeowners were looking to unify the aesthetic of the property with traditional Georgian-style sash windows, keeping as closely as possible to the original look, but with double-glazing and the high-performance of modern windows.

Some of the windows were also unusual sizes due to historic settlement of the building, so creating bespoke made-to-measure windows was essential.

Solution: Handcrafted Accoya Timber Windows Made in Yorkshire

The foundations of Patchett Joinery were laid nearly 200 years ago in 1840. Today, we combine the latest advances in technology with over 180 years of experience to craft premium-quality timber windows and doors on the same Yorkshire site. We directly employ a workforce of around 50 local people, allowing us to react quickly and effectively whilst controlling both quality and installation times.

We crafted and installed Accoya Sliding Sash Windows and a Flush Casement window, colour-matched to Farrow & Ball Shaded White. The windows were crafted with Georgian bars, in keeping with the 18th-century character of the farmhouse.

Due to condensation levels, the customers were originally concerned that plastic might have to be used for the bathroom windows. Luckily, this was not necessary, as we used Accoya!

Accoya timber is highly resistant to humidity due to its acetylation process, which significantly reduces its moisture content. Its dimensional stability means it is less prone to swelling, warping, and cracking when exposed to moisture, making it ideal for use in humid or wet conditions, such as bathroom windows.

The replacement windows and doors were also fitted with energy-efficient double glazing, dramatically improving thermal performance compared to the original single glazing.

Client testimonial

“Patchett Joinery were excellent.  They designed and delivered windows that look just right in our 18th-century farmhouse, enhancing rather than detracting from its looks, which was important to us.  The team were great throughout, and the fitters were highly professional – worked hard, everything was done to a high standard, pleasant to have around, and tidy.  Thank you – we have more windows to do and will be back for those!”
