Timber Windows in Conservation Areas: Swithland Case Study

Restoring Traditional Character with Bespoke Timber Windows and Doors

Background

Patchett Joinery was approached by homeowners in the conservation area of Swithland, Leicestershire. The home’s original timber windows had been replaced by UPVC units by previous owners. The customer wanted to restore the house to its original splendour with traditional timber windows and doors in keeping with its architectural heritage.

The Solution: Premium Accoya Timber Windows and Doors

We handcrafted and installed over 20 high-performance Flush Casement windows, a classic timber entrance door, a set of French doors, and two sets of French doors with sidelights. Using a microporous water-based painting system, we colour-matched the windows and doors to Farrow and Ball French Grey.

All of the windows and doors were crafted from Accoya wood – a premium quality modified timber with unrivalled benefits. Accoya is sustainably sourced and FSC-certified with a guarantee against preservative failure for 50 years (subject to exposure conditions), making it ideal for long-lasting timber window replacements.

Why Timber Windows Are Ideal for Conservation Areas

Timber windows are often preferred in conservation areas due to their natural look and ability to match traditional design features. Unlike plastic alternatives, timber frames maintain the property’s architectural character.

Accoya timber is not only durable and beautiful but also biodegradable and non-toxic, supporting eco-conscious renovation goals.

Service: A Thorough Survey and Gold-Level Installation

Prior to manufacture and installation, our expert surveyor provided a manufacturing survey and an installation assessment, including the measurements of the internal and external reveals for every window and door.

The customer selected our Gold-level installation package, which is perfect for homeowners who are living in the property. We protect floors and lay dust protection, remove and dispose of existing windows and doors and provide Building Regulation Approval where applicable.

Outcomes: Kerb Appeal Restored

The finished result is a stunning transformation: the property has regained its authentic period charm with bespoke timber windows and doors that blend seamlessly with the conservation setting.

The new premium timber windows and doors don’t just look good – they are also guaranteed for 50 years against preservative failure (subject to exposure conditions), making them a long-term investment in the property.
